Here are 5 key points from this episode:
- Intuition involves self-trust and tuning into your body’s signals, but many people ignore it due to past trauma or invalidation.
- There are 3 options when you get a “gut feeling”: the thing is off/not meant for you, the thing is a golden opportunity, or limiting beliefs are making you feel it’s wrong.
- To differentiate intuition from fear or limiting beliefs, check in with how you feel physically and emotionally about the opportunity.
- If you feel tightness, constriction, anxiety, that’s usually limiting beliefs; if you feel calm and relaxed, that’s more likely intuition.
- Do a body scan meditation to see how you feel about your income goals – constriction reveals blocks, relaxation reveals alignment.
In today’s episode, we’re talking all about intuition. Specifically, I’m going to help you determine whether or not it’s fear or intuition around money.
In this episode, I’m going to be walking you through the different ways fear and intuition show up and how to actually check in with yourself to determine whether or not this opportunity, this new thing, is a great thing for you or not the best, particularly, like I said, when it comes to money.
Welcome to the inevitable success, podcast. I’m your host, Dr. Ashlee Greer. I’m a former psychologist turn your go to mindset expert for high achieving entrepreneurs who want to take their income and success to the next level. This podcast is going to help you overcome anything that’s been going on inside of you that’s been holding you back from the wealth, income, and success and freedom and well being and happiness and joy that you so desire. So let’s jump right in.
I can’t tell you how many people ask me how the heck do I tell the difference between fear or intuition? Dr. Ash right, because a lot of times people just cannot tell the know they’re getting this so called gut feeling and they say, oh well, it must be my intuition telling me something is really bad here, something’s really off.
But maybe that’s my fear talking because I kind of feel fear in my gut too. Which thing is it in my gut that’s telling me? What is my gut telling me? Because we so often talk about intuition in terms of how do you feel in your gut? Well, there are definite ways to tell the difference and I’m here to help you determine which one it is today. So when it comes to intuition, thing to understand is everybody has intuition.
Everybody has this ability to tune into their intuition and to find the right path for them. This is something everyone has because that’s another thing I hear a lot too is people are like, well, I don’t really have a good sense of intuition or I don’t really have intuition. Yeah, that’s bull.
Everyone has it. You just might not have a lot of practice in trusting it. You see, intuition involves a lot of self trust, a lot of self trust, because the whole thing with intuition is you have to be able to tune into yourself and trust the signals that you’re getting from yourself.
The problem is most people ignore their intuition. They totally ignore those signals and signs that say warning. Warning.
This is not for you. I’m sure we’ve all been there before where we’ve stepped into a situation that maybe we shouldn’t have been in because we have ignored our intuition. I know it’s happened to me before where I have a new business opportunity with this happened years ago where I had a new business opportunity to partner up with somebody in a program and something inside of me was telling me, like, this person’s a flake.
This person isn’t it’s not gonna be it’s not going to be a great partnership, and I’m going to end up having to do all the work. Nah, that’s nonsense. This is a great opportunity.
This person’s great. Forget about it. Forget about it.
And I did and guess what? I did all the work, and it wasn’t so great because I ignored my intuition. I mean, how many of us have been there with relationships and dated, like, some crappy guy because we’ve overlooked the, quote, unquote red flags that have told us, like, oh, this guy probably isn’t going to be the best for me, but, oh, no, he’s so cute. Yeah, been there, done that.
How about you? We’re ignoring our intuition. We get so many signals about what’s right for us. It’s ridiculous.
But we don’t trust ourselves. There’s actual science that talks about how we actually take in information, so much information. We take in, like, 300 billion bits of information at any one moment.
But our conscious mind can only process, like, 300 bits of information. And so intuition can be this really spiritual woo woo thing, but ultimately, it’s also a neuroscience thing. It’s a brain thing.
It’s a filter thing, because your brain can only process consciously 300 bits of information at one time, but there’s 300 billion bits. There’s all this data going on in the background, in your subconscious that’s actually getting sort of microprocessed and you’re getting signals about what’s going on. So they studied F One drivers at one point, and they found out that a lot of F One drivers would avoid crashes around blind corners and somehow know to avoid these crashes and turn into a part of the track that they shouldn’t be on just automatically.
And they’re like, how would these F One drivers have this intuition to turn around a blind corner where they couldn’t see the crash around the corner and avoid it? How did that happen? What they did is they actually slowed down these video recorders, and they looked at the crowd, and they found out that the crowd was all looking around the blind corner. So the crowd was sitting there in the stands, and they were looking not at the race car driver that was approaching. They were looking around the corner toward forward on the track.
The driver subconsciously picked up on that information and subconsciously made a decision that helped them avoid that crash because of data that they weren’t even aware that they were taking in, which was where the crowd was looking on the track. This is an example of how you are constantly picking up information that you’re not even aware of that’s actually scientifically, neurologically, psychologically, actually shifting what it is you may do if you allow yourself to follow it, if you allow yourself to listen to it, if you allow yourself to shift those behaviors and shift those things based on that intuition. And again, there are spiritual aspects to intuition as well.
We get these messages that are just we can’t explain it and there’s no data to back it up and there’s no reason to believe it. And that’s an even stronger reason to think, wow, maybe I need to tune into my intuition and maybe there’s something here that has so much value for me. I am such a junkie for combining the spiritual with the scientific because when you bring those two things together, that’s when the magic happens.
And that’s when suddenly the logical scientific mind goes, wow, that makes sense. And then it relaxes and it allows sort of all of that magical spiritual stuff to come in and take hold. So I don’t know about you, but I love that stuff.
So everyone has a gut feeling, but we tend to ignore it. The thing is, intuition actually requires a great deal of self trust. It requires us to be able to look at ourselves and the impulses, the desires, the instincts, the weird little why do I keep getting this idea? Why do I keep why does that idea keep popping up for me? And trusting yourself enough to follow that path, to trust yourself enough to go, oh, even though that guy’s cute, I feel like something’s off, and to trust yourself.
The problem is for so many people is that they’ve lost that sense of self trust and so they’ve lost connection with their intuition. Trauma can be one of those reasons that people lose that self trust. Because when we’re growing up, what happens is there’s this thing called invalidation.
Invalidation is essentially when your parents tell you or teachers or whoever tell you, stop crying. There’s nothing to cry about. Well, what you’re being taught in that, that’s an example.
What you’re being taught in that moment is you can’t trust yourself and you can’t trust your emotions and you can’t trust your own internal world and your own natural responses and reactions to what’s going on and that you should instead defer to other people as the expert of what’s going on for you. I know it sounds so small, but this is the way trauma works is trauma is not always big. Trauma is a lot of times a lot of times it shows up with these micro traumas, these things that don’t actually seem like really a really big deal.
I’m a specialist in trauma and I can tell you that a lot of times it’s these stacked micro traumas that can make an even bigger impact than really giant traumas. Like losing your house in a tornado or something like that. These micro traumas, like being told to shut up or I’ll give you something to cry about or stop whining.
Why are you so sensitive? All of these kinds of things, what they do is they erode self trust and they erode your capacity to listen to your own intuition. This is when a lot of people will end up sliding, like I said, either into deferring to other people’s opinions. Well, they must know better.
They must know what I should do in my business. They must know the best way forward. Oh, I need this new magic strategy in order to make more money in my business.
Instead of trusting themselves that they’re on the right path, or trusting that they have an instinct to work on this belief or work in this program or work with this mentor. But, oh, I don’t know, because my logical mind is telling me that that’s beyond my budget this month, or that’s too much of a pain in the butt, or I actually need to just work longer hours instead of go, maybe take a walk right now. Ever had that one? I know I’ve had that one.
That intuition that I’ve ignored. No. I should work.
No, maybe resting is the best thing right now. Don’t get me started on how rest can really impact your income and totally take you to the next level of abundance. But that’s the topic for another podcast.
So let’s go back to this intuition, right? The other thing that can happen. So, like I said, you defer to other people’s opinion. You think they’re the expert on what you should do, instead of realizing that in order to become the CEO in your business and the leader in your life and business, you have to take the leadership role.
You have to take the CEO role, which means you’re where the buck stops, and you’re the one who’s the expert on what’s best for you. So that’s one. Two is discounting.
What they’re feeling is just fear. Feeling as though what you’re feeling, oh, I’m just afraid I should just push forward. Because we’re taught so often in our culture, just suck it up, just push forward.
Just ignore how you’re feeling. Ignore what’s going on inside of you. Just go, go.
And that also makes us tune out our intuition. It makes us tune out of who and what we are and the guidance that we are being provided. Whether it comes from those subconscious factors of data we’re taking in or these other factors that are being downloaded to us, doesn’t really matter where it’s coming from.
What matters is we discount it and we tell ourselves that it’s just fear and we write it off and we ignore it. The other thing that happens is we feel as though we are perhaps on the wrong path, when maybe it’s not intuition. I mean, maybe we think, oh, this intuitively doesn’t feel good, so I must be on the wrong path again.
That’s that just fear. It’s those limiting beliefs that are coming up. So here’s the deal with intuition.
There’s basically three options when it comes to we get this gut feeling, right? The first one is the thing that we’re thinking about. Like, let’s say the thing is a new business opportunity. It’s to partner up with a big influencer who’s going to promote our stuff to their list? Let’s just say that’s the thing.
So let’s say there are three options. The first one is the thing is off and it’s not meant for me because you’re feeling something in your gut. The second is this thing is in alignment and it’s a golden opportunity because you’re feeling something in your gut.
The third thing is there are limiting beliefs coming up for me that are causing me to feel some things and perhaps mistake that this thing might be wrong because of the limiting beliefs and I’m also feeling it in my gut. So how the heck do you tell the difference when you’re feeling all three things in your gut? Right? Well, one of the most important things you need to do in order to differentiate between intuition, fear, limiting beliefs and whether or not something is just the wrong freaking choice for you is you have to get reconnected to yourself. You have to get reconnected to both your body and your feelings.
Your body and your feelings ultimately hold the key to what your intuition is trying to tell you. Your body communicates to your brain like 80% of the nerve fibers in your being go from your body to your brain. Only 20% go from your brain to your body.
Your body is constantly giving you signals, your brain signals about what’s up. Your body holds the score, literally. And there’s a good book called that.
Check it out anyway. And your feelings, your feelings are also giving you feedback that go beyond this conscious logical mind. The conscious logical mind is not where intuition lives.
The conscious logical mind holds a crapload of value. We want it to be in there in the mix. We want to be able to look at our data and our numbers and objective reality and look at things and say this needs Tweaking because this data isn’t working and this part of our funnel isn’t working.
But we also want to balance it with our intuition. We also want to balance it with what’s going on in our body and our feelings. The problem that many, many people have is they believe that the mind is the master.
The mind is the master. And I work on mindset a lot with my clients. And you might think that I think that well, let me tell you, the mind is actually the assistant.
The mind is the one that goes out there and implements it’s actually our emotions and our feelings and our intuition and our body that end up making most of the decisions. There’s psychological research on this that actually points out that most decision making is emotional. Like 95% of it.
And so when I teach my clients copywriting and messaging and creating their offers and creating a lead system that really works, we often talk about really resonating with this emotional part. Because if we only connect with that logical part of our brain or of our customers brains. What happens is we miss the boat and we can’t connect to it because that’s not where the decisions are made.
Yet we don’t even realize it. So much comes from our subconscious, from our feelings, from our body. And we need to be able to really give it a voice that we will listen to and not override it through either logic deferring to other people.
Brushing it off as fear pushing through. It the go go energy of oh, I just need to do it, and oh, screw this thing that I’m experiencing that’s telling me otherwise. So how do you check in with your version, with your version, with your intuition? I’m going to give you the quick and dirty version here to help you take this a step deeper.
I provide a deeper version on some of my free resources, like my secret podcast to melt your money fears. Check that out. Definitely want to invite you to take this even deeper, but the quick and dirty version is you really need to check in with your body and sit with the feelings that are coming up around whatever it is that you’re getting that gut instinct around.
So we’ve been talking about this new experience, this new opportunity with this influencer and yada, yada, yada. So let’s say that’s coming up for you. How do you actually feel in your body when you think about that opportunity? You ask yourself, does it feel like constriction? Does it feel tight? Do my shoulders raise up to my earlobes? Do I feel anxiety? Do I feel fear? Does it feel like I need to hurry, hurry, hurry, rush, rush, rush? Does it feel like pressure? Or do I actually physically feel relaxed, grounded, at ease? Like I can take a breath, like there’s spaciousness expansion? How do I actually feel in my physical body and in my emotions when I think about this opportunity? This is the way that you tell the difference.
When it feels like constriction, when it feels tight. You are more than likely coming from a place of your limiting beliefs and your money blocks and things that are going on in your subconscious which are not directing you towards following your intuition. Whether your intuition is telling you the opportunity is for you or not, it’s not going to feel like that tight, fearful, anxious energy.
It will feel off, it will feel tilted. It will feel maybe darker or less vibrant, less open, but it’s not going to feel tight, constricted, fearful, rushed, heart racing. Oh, my God.
Oh, my God. Energy. That energy is almost always related to that subconscious junk in your trunk, that money block, that limiting belief, those stories that you’ve been taught, all of that financial trauma, the traumas from the past, the chronic stressors, a dysregulated nervous system, all of the stuff that I teach in my program, empowering, wealth.
It is related to those things, if it’s coming from that constricted, anxious, fearful energy almost every single time. If instead it just doesn’t feel right, but you still feel calm, that’s when you know that the intuition is telling you something. So one last thing to leave you with here in our little podcast about Intuition is my lovely little quiz to help you understand whether or not your money goals that you have for this month or the end of this year or for all of next year, for 2024 are aligned for you to intuitively tell whether or not you’re on the right track or you have some money blocks and some limiting beliefs coming up around it.
So I want to invite you to just close your eyes for just a second and to really feel in to the present moment, to just take a nice deep breath and land right here and right now. Just let the world melt away. Take a nice deep breath in, feel your rib cage and your lungs naturally expand as you invite expansion into your life.
And take a nice deep breath out as you release any tension from the day, anything that isn’t you, and do it two more times. One nice deep breath in as you expand, and one out as you release. One last breath in as you expand, and one breath out as you release.
Now, I want you to tune into your body and to see how you feel when I ask you the following questions when I invite you to the following opportunities. This month, I am so excited to make an extra $20,000 in my business. Where do you feel that in your body? What comes up for you emotionally? Does it feel tight? Does it feel relaxed? It is so easy to have consistent ten k months in my business.
Now, where do you feel that in your body? What comes up for you around that emotionally? Anxiety, fear, anticipation, excitement? Little bit of both. I know that I can generate more income anytime I want. Where do you feel that in your body? How does that feel emotionally? I was just given a $10,000 check and I love it.
How does that feel in your body? Where do you feel that? Does it feel tight? Does it feel relaxed? How does it feel emotionally? I am confident in my ability to be able to create the business that supports the freedom that I want in my life and the impact that I want to make in the world. Where do you feel that in your body? Does it feel tight? Does it feel relaxed? Does it bring up anxiety? Does it bring up excitement? Now, I invite you back here to the present moment and maybe take a second and write down your responses to each of those questions. Now, what happened there in that moment is you are essentially revealing if there’s tightness, if there’s constriction that there are limiting beliefs, there are money blocks, there are mindset blocks around those things.
Whether it’s generating the extra 100K in your business or consistent ten k months, or whether it’s limiting beliefs around, if people give me money, I feel guilty, whatever it might be, it reveals that there’s limiting beliefs and that there’s blocks around those things. If you feel that constriction, anxiety, fear, tightness, tension, stress, but if you felt relaxation, calm, excitement, contentment, groundedness, this feeling of yes, yeah. Then you’revealing yourself the opposite, that perhaps there is an open highway in front of you and it’s just a matter of making some tweaks to get yourself there.
Now, hopefully what we did on today’s podcast was super valuable to you and was super helpful. I’d love to hear what came up for you and how this will impact your business going forward. Because the truth is that intuition is one of your superpowers and it is essential to be able to tune into it to make your business not only successful, but to make it something that nourishes you and nurtures you, so that you have a Zen badass business.
Not just a business that makes you have to hustle and push and feel like it’s hard. Because who the heck wants that? We want a business that feels amazing and that feeds ourselves, our income, our wealth, our prosperity, and feeds the world through our impact, through the transformations we provide, through health people, right? We want that beautiful balance. So when we can combine data with our intuition, that’s when the magic happens.
All right, I’ll see you on the next episode.
