What if the easiest life you can imagine is actually available to you right now? What if the key isn’t working harder, but getting into deeper alignment with who you really are? When you know how to get into alignment, then this becomes easy.
I’ve made about a gazillion quantum leaps in my own life (leaving my “looked good on paper” life, leaving my job as a psychologist and starting my own business, living in a log cabin in the rockies, moving off grid to Hawaii, moving to Bali – just to name a few!).
One of the key things I’ve had to learn is how to get into alignment.
The truth is, ease isn’t something you achieve—it’s something you align with.
And alignment isn’t some mystical concept that requires years of meditation on a mountaintop. It’s a practical, learnable skill that creates flow in every area of your life.
What Alignment Actually Means
Alignment is when your actions, decisions, and energy match your authentic truth. It’s when your nervous system feels calm, your body feels energized, and opportunities seem to flow naturally toward you.
Think of it like tuning a guitar. When the strings are in tune, everything sounds harmonious with minimal effort.
When they’re out of tune, even simple songs feel forced and discordant. Your life works the same way.
Being in alignment is like tuning your soul to the frequency of flow, ease, and joy.
That’s the way your life is meant to feel.
When you’re in alignment:
- Decisions feel clear and natural
- Energy flows rather than drains
- Right people and opportunities show up
- Work feels energizing instead of depleting
- Your body feels relaxed and strong
When you’re out of alignment:
- Everything feels like pushing uphill
- You’re constantly second-guessing yourself
- Energy feels scattered or depleted
- You attract people and situations that drain you
- Your body holds tension and stress

The Golden Retriever Principle
Your soul is like a friendly golden retriever who knows exactly how to boogie down with its fun-loving self.
It’s constantly trying to guide you toward what will bring you joy, energy, and ease. It’s literally trying to show you how to get into alignment in every single moment.
The problem? Most of us have been trained to ignore this internal guidance system in favor of what looks “smart” or “practical” on paper. Or what seems “practical”, “professional”, or “adult”.
Yuck-a-roonie.
Let’s chuck that whole concept in the bin, shall we?
You get to have fun. You get to play. You get to have a delicious, delightful life that feels good and easy.
The whole trick is to align to it (you don’t have to force it – and if you are – you’re doing it wrong!).
Your soul knows the easy path.
It knows how to get you in to alignment. It knows what lights you up and what drains you than you can consciously thinhk about it.
But somewhere along the way, we got convinced that if something feels easy and joyful, it must be wrong.
What absolute bullshit.
How To Get Into Alignment: 5 Practical Steps
Step 1: Learn Your Body’s Alignment Language
Your body is constantly giving you information about how to get into alignment and guiding you toward what’s aligned and what’s not. That golden retriever is communicating through physical sensations, energy levels, and emotional responses.
Your alignment signals:
- Expansion: Your chest opens, breathing deepens, you feel spacious
- Energy increases: You feel more alive and awake
- Time flows: You lose track of time in a good way
- Natural confidence: Decisions feel clear and grounded
Your out of alignment signals:
- Contraction: Your chest tightens, shoulders hunch, breathing becomes shallow
- Energy drains: You feel tired or depleted
- Time drags: Everything feels effortful, slow, and heavy
- Confusion: You overthink and second-guess everything
Practice: Before saying yes to anything this week, pause and ask your body: “Does this feel expansive or contractive?”
Trust the first answer you get.
Step 2: Regulate Your Nervous System First
Most people don’t realize that a dysregulated nervous system can’t make aligned decisions.
Period.
You can’t figure out how to get into alignment if you’re in a chronic state of fight-or-flight, when you’re feeling chronically stressed, or when you’re in that anxious and fearful place that feels like van Gogh’s The Scream.
When you feel that way your brain is literally going offline and so is your ability to figure out how to get into alignment.
And then guess what happens? You can only see problems, not possibilities.
80% of nerve signals run from your body TO your brain, not the other way around. This means your nervous system state determines what your brain is thinking and perceiving.
Simple nervous system regulation practices:
- 4-7-8 breathing: Inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8
- Body scan: Notice tension and consciously soften those areas
- Movement: Shake, stretch, or dance for 2 minutes
- Cold water: Splash cold water on your face and wrists
Practice: Check in with your nervous system before making any important decisions.
Ask: “Am I regulated enough to see clearly right now?”

Step 3: Transform Problems into Alignment Puzzles
This is where the magic happens. Instead of seeing challenges as problems to solve through force and struggle, what if you approached them as alignment puzzles to solve through curiosity and play?
The neuroscience: Your brain responds completely differently to puzzles versus problems.
Problems trigger stress and narrow thinking.
Puzzles feel fun, approachable, and activate curiosity and creative problem-solving.
Problems feel like:
- Heavy, overwhelming, urgent
- Limited solutions, scarcity thinking
- “I have to figure this out right now”
- Stress and pressure
Alignment puzzles feel like:
- Light, curious, spacious
- Multiple possibilities, abundance thinking
- “I wonder what wants to emerge here”
- Excitement and experimentation
Practice: Take one area of your life that feels challenging and reframe it: “How might this be an alignment puzzle showing me where I’m ready to grow?”
Step 4: Follow Your Joy as Data
Your joy isn’t frivolous—it’s sophisticated intelligence.
What brings you genuine delight is your soul’s way of showing you how to get into alignment. How to connect with the direction of your expansion and contribution.
Joy-based decision making:
- Notice what activities make you lose track of time
- Pay attention to conversations that energize you
- Follow curiosities even if they seem “impractical”
- Choose what feels alive over what feels “should-y”
The difference between pleasure and joy:
- Pleasure is temporary satisfaction that often leaves you wanting more
- Joy is sustainable delight that fills you up and wants to be shared
Practice: For one week, make one small choice each day based purely on what would bring you joy.
Notice what happens to your energy and opportunities.
Step 5: Take Aligned Action (Even When It Feels Too Easy)
Here’s the part that trips most people up: aligned action often feels easier than you think it should.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that anything worthwhile must be difficult, but alignment creates natural flow.
Aligned action feels like:
- Natural momentum and sustainable energy
- Excitement mixed with some healthy nervousness
- A sense of “yes, this is right” in your body
- Challenging in a way that makes you grow
Forced action feels like:
- Pushing against resistance constantly
- Immediate burnout or depletion
- A sense of “I should want this” instead of genuinely wanting it
- Stressful in a way that makes you smaller
Practice: Take one aligned action this week, even if it feels “too easy” or “too good to be true.”
Your nervous system knows the difference between aligned ease and avoidance.

What Life Looks Like When You’re Out of Alignment
In Relationships:
- You constantly walk on eggshells around certain people
- Conversations feel forced, boring, or draining
- You apologize for who you are instead of finding people who celebrate you
- Conflicts feel like battles where someone has to lose
- You say yes when you mean no to avoid disappointing others
- You dim your light so others feel more comfortable
With Money and Work:
- Work feels like drudgery that drains your life force
- You dread Monday mornings and live for weekends
- Money feels scarce no matter how much you make
- You pursue opportunities that pay well but kill your spirit
- Success feels empty or like it belongs to someone else
- You make decisions based on fear rather than alignment
In Health and Wellness:
- Exercise feels like punishment you force yourself through
- You follow wellness routines that make you feel worse
- Energy feels scattered, depleted, or artificially sustained by caffeine
- Sleep is elusive because stress keeps your mind racing
- Your body feels like an enemy to control rather than a friend to listen to
- Self-care feels selfish or like another item on your to-do list
In Creativity and Expression:
- Ideas feel stuck or you never start projects because they’re not “perfect”
- You create from pressure, comparison, or trying to please others
- Sharing your work terrifies you because you fear judgment
- Perfectionism kills joy before it can even begin
- You wait for the “right time” while your creative soul slowly suffocates
- You compare your messy beginnings to everyone else’s polished results
When Alignment Feels Scary
Sometimes alignment asks you to make changes that feel scary or “impractical.”
Your soul might be calling you toward something that doesn’t make logical sense yet.
This is normal and doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
Aligned fear feels different than misaligned fear:
- Aligned fear has excitement underneath it—like riding a roller coaster
- Misaligned fear feels heavy and contractive—like being trapped
Let me tell you, every time I’ve made an aligned leap in my life I’m both scared and excited. I call this the “fizzy energy of excitement” where your excitement is edged by fear. If you’re not a little bit afraid, you may not be dreaming big enough. And if you’re overwhelmed by fear? Well, then you may be living from “shoulds” or your nervous system may not yet be attuned to that new level yet.
Practice: When facing a scary but potentially aligned choice, ask: “Is this fear trying to keep me safe or keep me small?”
The Ripple Effect of Living in Alignment
Once you figure out how to get into alignment and start living in alignment, everything begins to shift. It’s like pulling one thread and watching the whole tapestry rearrange itself into something more beautiful.
You give others permission to live authentically. You model what’s possible. You become living proof that ease and success can coexist.
Your alignment creates:
- Permission for others to be authentic
- Opportunities that align with your values
- Relationships based on genuine connection
- Work that feels like contribution rather than obligation
- A life that energizes you instead of depleting you
Your Weekly Alignment Practice
Every morning this week, ask yourself:
- “How is my nervous system right now?” (Regulate first if needed)
- “What would alignment look like in this situation?”
- “How to get into alignment right now?”
- “What small choice can I make today that would bring me joy?”
- “What is my body telling me about this decision?”
Remember: Alignment isn’t a destination, it’s a practice. Some days you’ll feel completely in flow, other days you’ll catch yourself forcing things. Both are part of the process.
The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is increasing your capacity to recognize and choose alignment more often.
Your easiest, most joyful life is waiting for you to align with it.
