Key Takeaways:
- A lack mindset believes resources are limited and for one person to gain, another must lose. An abundance mindset believes there is enough for everyone and when one person succeeds, others can benefit too.
- A common manifestation of lack mindset is the belief “I only need/want this much,” which limits potential and success out of fear of taking from others.
- Lack mindset can stem from not seeing examples of greater success, cultural narratives about what’s possible, and limiting beliefs about one’s potential.
- Bargaining with the universe (e.g. “I’ll be happy with just this much”) is another sign of lack mindset and settling for less than one desires.
- Shifting to an abundance mindset allows people to expand their goals, receive more, and achieve greater success, impact, and freedom without guilt or fear of depriving others.
So this week we are talking about something that is just so epically important. The difference between a lack mindset and an abundance mindset.
And one of the top ways that I see this showing up for peeps and how it shrinks their finances, how it shrinks their success, how it shrinks their business, how it shrinks everything they want in their life, because it basically shrinks their potential.
So first and foremost, let’s jump into what the heck is a lack mindset versus an abundance mindset.
Why the heck does this matter to me and why should I be paying attention? Right?
So a lack mindset is essentially the idea that for me to win, somebody else has to lose.

That the way that the world works is that there’s always something lost for something to be gained. That is the essential baseline phenomenon, baseline thing about what a lack mindset is that things will run out, that there’s not enough, and that basically it’s like putting water into a jug, that the more I drain out, the less I have. Right? That’s a lack mindset.
An abundance mindset, on the other hand, is the idea that when I win, others win. When I have more, other people have more. When I put out good energy, more energy returns to me.
An abundance mindset is more like a chocolate fountain. I mean, granted, chocolate fountains probably need to be, you know, refilled as well, but you know what I mean? It just keeps flowing and it just keeps regenerating and it just keeps bringing up more.
This is the idea of an abundance mindset. An abundance mindset is the notion that there is always enough. An abundance mindset is the notion that there is always the opportunity.
Fuck the opportunity. There is always the reality of overflow. There is always more to be had and that you are allowed to have it because you are not taking from someone else by having it.
Now, that last thing that I said is incredibly important, particularly for conscious entrepreneurs like you. The idea that you are not taking from someone else in order to have what you want. And this leads into that number one way that I see a lack mindset show up for people that they don’t even realize is a lack mindset.
So this lack mindset shows up in the statement, and let me know if you’ve ever said this to yourself, I only need this much. I only need this much, or I only want to take this much, or I only want to make as much as I need. I only want to make as much that will cover my bills.
I only want to do so Much so that, you know, I’m sure my family’s taken care of, but I don’t need anything more than that. Have you ever found yourself saying that? What this is at its core is this is a feeling usually inspired by a feeling that there’s just not enough to go around. So I better not take too much.
Here’s an example for you, a perfect example that will allow you to understand how this actually looks. Imagine the difference between two meals. In one meal, you’re sitting at a table family style and someone brings out four big plates of food, right? There’s a bunch of people at the table and you get handed the plate first.
You only want to take a small portion because you want to make sure everybody at that table gets fed. Everybody at that table gets what they need. Incredibly kind and empathic, you know, considerate perspective to have when food is offered family style at the table.
Because there’s only so much food on that table right now. Consider the second meal. At the second meal you go up to a buffet and that buffet is always refilled.
You can take as much as you frickin want of whatever you frickin want without thinking for a second that the next person doesn’t get a lobster tail, or the next person doesn’t get the cottage cheese, or the next person doesn’t get the beets or whatever the heck it is that you want to have, or the omelets or whatever. Because you know, there’s always more and they’re always bringing more. And so by you taking whatever you want, you’re not taking away from other people.
The problem is our society teaches us that life is the family style meal. And that by taking a little bit, we’re being compassionate and we’re taking care of other people. And we’re being loving and kind and conscious and you know, we’re just really trying to make sure that we’re not building what we want on the backs of other people.
This comes from basically the industrial revolution where there were these big, you know, like steel magnets or whatever they were, you know, like Rockefeller and shit like that that were building their businesses on the backs of other people. Unfortunately, in our day and age, there’s still people who are building their businesses on the backs of other people. However, not everyone does it that way and not everyone comes from it that way.
And the more money and the more resources and the more, I don’t know, like embracing of your ability to create a big impact and a big business and make a big splash in our society in the hands of people like you. The more we do that, the more we shift our entire society away from that building, our building, you know, success and money and wealth on the backs of other people. And instead we come from the idea of one boat rises, all boats rise, which is a true abundance mindset.
This is the idea that as we become more wealthy, as we make more money, as we create more success, everyone around us rises as well. We are like the tide that all boats rise along with. We buy, you know, more free trade stuff, we hire people at fair prices, we make sure that there’s equal and fair rules in place, we treat people equitably.
All of these things happen. The more power and the more money we get in the hands of conscious people. So that’s, that’s that important piece there in terms of feeling as though it’s this old school family style meal where we’re building it on the backs of other people versus this new school buffet idea that when we run up, when we run life from the mindset of abundance, of unlimited potentiality for everyone, we can see that the more we take, we’re not taking away from other people.
So that’s the number one reason that a lot of people like you have this I only want so much. And they shrink their dreams down to fit, and they shrink their money goals down to fit and they shrink their desire for money or for wealth or for to be a financially, you know, abundantly financially resourced down to fit because of guilt, because of fear, because of a good fucking heart that wants other people to win too. And because of limiting beliefs and old stuck stories that tell you that by you winning other people will lose and that other people will miss out and that you’re taking things from other people and you’re building things on the backs of other people.
And those things just are not true. There are ways for our society to work that do not buy into that paradigm. But that’s, that’s too big of a topic for this, for, for this video.
So other reasons that this can show up is that we believe that there are limits on what we can have. This can happen due to old stories that we have limiting beliefs and blocks that we have money blocks that we have that tell us that there’s only this much available. Or maybe we’ve only seen people in our family or in our communities only ever reach this level.
And so we don’t ever feel as though we can reach the next level. I had a client talk about this recently where she said, I can’t even Imagine a million dollar a year business because I’ve never ever known anyone who’s done that. So I have shrunk my goals to be a $200,000 a year business because I’ve seen other people do that and I know that that’s possible.
This is another reason we end up saying I only need this much is because we don’t have the examples, we don’t have the models, we don’t have this like somebody holding space for us to be stepping into that big vision, for us to be stepping into that entitlement and permission and deservingness for this bigness of our financial goals, of our wealth building, of our success, of our impact, of all of those things, of our freedom. I mean even like that’s an example, that’s a really good example that’s not involved with money is that like, I can’t tell you how many people come from the 9 to 5 mindset where they only look at being able to make money by working for somebody else, by being chained to a desk, by going in and getting stuck in traffic every single day. And they can’t even conceptualize being able to run their own business, live and work wherever the heck they want, work by their own timelines, create their own schedule, be their own boss, and it being more financially rewarding because they don’t have anybody that they’ve ever seen model that for them.
They don’t have a parent who is an entrepreneur, or a friend who is an entrepreneur or a community of entrepreneurs surrounding them and so they can’t even visualize it. So that’s the second reason that this lack mindset of I only want this much or I only need this much can show up. Another reason is this cultural narrative of what you’ve seen accomplished around you, which we just talked about, is this idea that well, you know, people in my community only do this much, or teachers can only do this much, or I work with a lot of therapists, psychologists, nurses, you know, like functional medicine, doctors, things like that.
Well, these people who work in these industries can only make this much. Well, that’s a limiting belief. That’s a block that is you having a belief that is not accurate based upon assumptions, only upon what you’ve seen.
Which is totally natural by the way, making assumptions on based on what you’ve seen. But that’s why we have to break the frickin framework. We have to break free of what it is that we have seen so far and realize that that’s not where revolution happens, that’s not where innovation happens.
Innovation and revolution happen outside of the scene. They happen outside of what it is that we have seen as possible. It happens in the things that maybe other people think are impossible.
But truly what it is, what it is is they just haven’t been there yet. They just haven’t been there yet. So the these things altogether feeling like other people will lose, feeling guilt for having some of these things, have this cultural narrative that goes on, feeling like, you know, it’s like you’re going to have to build these things on the backs of others.
Feeling like there’s limits to what you have. And then the last thing is feeling as though you have to bargain with the universe. Now who here has ever felt that experience where you’ve been trying to manifest something? Maybe it’s an income goal, maybe it’s, you know what I mean, a new partner, whatever it is, and it’s just not coming fast enough.
And so you go, well, I mean, I guess I’ll be happy if I can just have blank. I guess. I mean, I know I wanted to make $10,000 this month, but if I can just make two, I can just cover my bills, it’ll be okay.
I’ll just be happy. I promise. I won’t, I won’t complain as long as I can just do this.
Bargaining with the universe. That’s not coming from that state of irrational belief. That’s not coming from that state of confidence.
That’s not coming from that state of this is a non negotiable from that state of this is my reality. That’s coming from a state of oh, oh, I’ll take whatever I can get. Talk about a lack mindset, right? I’ll take whatever I can get.
I mean you’ve probably had friends who have had that experience with a partner, you know what I mean? It’s this like beautiful person who’s so kind, they go out there and deserve the world and then they end up settling for somebody that isn’t very nice or whatever. And because they just have convinced themselves that there’s not enough people out there, all the good ones are taken. Yeah, bullshit.
And so they go, I’ll take what I can get. And we do that when it comes to our finances. And we do that when it comes to our success.
And we do that when it comes to our creative self expression. And we do that when it comes to our businesses. And it’s complete and utter bullshit.
And you deserve better, frankly, you deserve better. So when you’re able to identify these lack mindsets in the way they show up and shift into an abundance mindset, which is what I help my clients achieve. You are able to then step into more, expand into more, and receive more and hold on to more money, freedom, success, abundance, all of the things impact, you know, service, all of the beautiful things that you want with more ease because you’re no longer throwing on the handbrake and holding yourself back because you think something bad’s going to happen.
If you get to have it all, I’m here to tell you point blank, you get to have it all, and it’s time that you believed it.
